III. Literature as a Platform in Education for Sustainable Development

Literature expanses your learning. It helps you to think. Helps you in writing. Understand things.Helps you to learn different phrases. Literature not only describes reality but also adds to it. Yes, literature is not merely a depiction of reality; it is rather a value-addition. Literary works are portrayals of the thinking patterns and social norms prevalent in society. They are a depiction of the different facets of common man's life. Classical literary works serve as a food for thought and a tonic for imagination and creativity. Exposing an individual to good literary works, is equivalent to providing him/her with the finest of educational opportunities. On the other hand, the lack of exposure to classic literary works is equal to depriving an individual from an opportunity to grow as an individual.
Prose, poetry, drama, essays, fiction, literary works based on philosophy, art, history, religion, and culture and also scientific and legal writings are grouped under the category of literature. Creative nonfiction of the ancient times and literary journalism also fall under literature. Certain extremely technical writings such as those on logistics and mathematics are also believed to be a part of literature. Some of the great literary works like the Bible and Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata, among others, provide society with the guiding principles of life. Ancient poetic works by poets like Homer, Plato, Sappho, Horace and Virgil, Shakespeare's sonnets and notable poetry by W.B. Yeats, John Keats, Wordsworth, Tennyson and William Blake are timeless. The Lord of the Rings, The Godfather, A Tale of Two Cities, James Bond series are some of the best-selling books of all time. The Adventures of Pinocchio, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Winnie-the-Pooh were some of the greatest works in children's literature. The relatively recent Harry Potter series made record sales across the globe and carved a niche for J.K. Rowling. However, a discussion about children's authors would be incomplete without the mention of all-time popular authors like Aesop, Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl and Mark Twain. It is through reading such great literary and poetic works, that one understands life. They help a person take a closer look at the different facets of life. In many ways, it can change one's perspective towards life. Lives of brilliant achievers and individuals who have made a valuable contribution to society, are sketched in their biographies. These works give the readers an insight into the lives of these eminent people, while also serving as a bible of ideals.Literature serves as an enormous information base. Research works by famous inventors and literary works by notable scientists often narrate stories of their groundbreaking discoveries and inferences. Ongoing developments in the fields of science and technology are documented so that the world can know about them. Several ancient scriptures relating stories of human evolution and narratives of human life in those times, have been of tremendous help to mankind. Thus, literature has always served as an authentic source of information from all around the world. True, languages are the building blocks of literature. But the study of literature cannot be restricted to only studying languages. In fact, literature cannot be confined to an educational curriculum. A degree in language and literature is perhaps unable to provide one, with everything that literature can offer.
Literature, is definitely, much more than its literary meaning, which defines it as 'an acquaintance to letters'. It, in fact, lays the foundation of an enriched life; it adds 'life' to 'living'.

IV. Reflection in Literature

The collective writings proper to any language or nature is what we called literature. World literature includes all these in translation . The term literature is a site of ideological conflict; it maybe taken to refer exclusively to those canonical works in the establish genres which have pleased many and pleased long or inclusively to the sum of total writing which are read, even the most ephemeral, such as comics and news papers. Essay, letters, memoirs, historical, biographical and travel writings, occasional verse, etc. will considered literature depending on the point of view. That means "nosebleed". I didn't know what to say about what my teacher talking about. She's always talking in front but her student did not pay attention to the lesson that she talks about, that's the first topic that we discuss. But i know that literature is writings having artistic value or expression and expressing idea of permanent or universal interest to write.
Second topic, legend, it is the story coming down from the past or a history. We learned more about legend. One o this is the legend of Mt. Mayon which has a shape of a perfect cone or a vast of lady which is Daraga Magayon. The legend of Mt. Makiling who named after  Maria Makiling, a fairy or a white lady in the story. There are lots of  legend that we talked about but very disgusting because she give quiz evereday after the reporting or discussion. But that's okay because we learned to study everyday.
Haixt! Next is the riddles- it is a mystifying problem or fact or it is a short and especially humorous verbal  puzzle. In this lesson I learned to know what is the different riddles, as always quiz is approaching.
Next, the chants or song. Opps! the proverbs also, which we discuss more about life. The trials or many circumstances in one's life. The last is the epic-a long narrative poem which is included in the exam. :)
Remember the long quiz? It is not a quiz but rather the "surprise midterm examination". :D It's okay because I really do my best to passed the examination. Even though my teacher is strict, I learned how to be responsible in my studies and I remember that there are many reasons to be attentive to the class discussion even if your teacher is not an ideal teacher that you want but she teaches us well and guide us in every topic that we discuss in order to have a high grade and a very outstanding output. For that, I thank my teacher in Literature III because of what she've done to us.
V. Integration in Education for Sustainable Development
Education is the foundation for sustainable development. It is a key instrument for bringing about changes in values and attitudes, skills, behaviors and lifestyles consistent with sustainable development within and among countries.
The concept of sustainable development includes the key areas of society, environment and economy, with culture as an underlying dimension. The values, diversity, knowledge, languages and worldviews associated with culture influence the way Education for sustainable development is implemented in specific national contexts.Literature is a wordy representation of culture and culture is an embodiment of habits, customs, social behavior, knowledge and assumptions associated with a group of people. These days there is a shift from Using Literature in the language classroom to using culture in the language classroom. Hall focuses on the development of literature studies based on classics tradition to its present day shift into cultural studies. So if we go according to mathematical terminology Literature representation mean cultural representation. According to Kramsch “Culture is membership in a discourse community that shares a common social space and history, and a common system of standards for perceiving, believing, evaluating and action. The term culture will be used in the sense of whatever a person must have in order to function and live in a society”.Thus literature/culture provides a framework regarding social theories of second language acquisition and its relevance with language skills. This includes also socio-cultural factors in the language teaching/learning materials.
